Four different faults produce the same symptom. Knowing which one you have changes everything that follows.
Four Causes, One Symptom
A slow phone is not a single problem. It is one of four, and they do not share a fix.
Battery chemistry. Lithium-ion cells lose capacity as they age, and a worn cell cannot sustain peak processor demand. The operating system — on both Android and iOS — detects this and throttles CPU speed to prevent sudden shutdowns. The phone feels sluggish because it is being deliberately slowed. The signature is hesitation under load: opening a camera, launching a heavy app, anything that draws hard on the processor. Check the battery health figure in settings; anything below roughly 80% is doing measurable work to the system's performance ceiling.
Storage saturation. A drive running close to full cannot write temporary files efficiently. The slowdown here is less about processing speed and more about I/O — the phone pauses mid-task waiting for the storage system to find space. The tell is lag after taps rather than during them: the app opens, then stutters, then recovers. Free up space and the lag often shrinks within hours.
OS overhead. Each major software update is written for current hardware. Running a recent OS on older silicon strains the system, and background processes accumulate over time regardless. This kind of slowdown is diffuse — everything is slightly slower, not just specific tasks. A factory reset, painful as it is, will confirm whether software is the culprit: a clean install on the same hardware either restores speed or confirms the hardware ceiling has been reached.
Hardware fault. Thermal throttling from a failing heat-management system, a damaged storage chip, or a connector working loose — these produce erratic, inconsistent slowdown that does not map cleanly to the patterns above. The phone is fast, then very slow, then fast again. This is where diagnostics end and physical inspection begins.
The order matters for diagnosis: battery chemistry and storage are cheap and fast to investigate, OS overhead costs time but no money, hardware fault costs both. Work through them in that sequence before spending anything.
